Q. What does FAQ stand for?

A. FAQ is short for "frequently asked questions."

Pat Evoy has compiled a great resource in a Word document found here. This document is useful for both new and veteran referees answering such questions as:

Q: How do I become a USSF referee?
A: Basically, you take a class, pass a test and fill out the appropriate registration paperwork. Of course, that is just the beginning. After your class, you may register on Oregon Soccer Central's web site if you wish to view assignments for a variety of organizations, including OYSA. There are other sources of game assignments, such as your local recreational club games, which may or may not be listed on Oregon Soccer Central.

HOW TO REGISTER:
Either sign up with the specific class contact (see calendar link) or email Oregon's director of instruction. Class sizes are limited - you MUST pre-register!
COST:
$25.00 for the class, plus $25.00 USSF registration fee after passing the test.
Student must attend all classes within a series. Bring check for payment to the class unless otherwise specified.
For a list of currently scheduled entry level referee classes, visit State Director of Instruction (SDI) Ken Jameson: jamesonk@earthlink.net

Q: How do I become a local (COSOA) referee?
A: The Central Oregon Soccer Officials Association (COSOA) provides referees for high school, youth, and adult soccer games for all of Central Oregon, including Bend, Redmond, Madras, Prineville, Sisters, and Culver. In addition, COSOA provides continuing education and administrates local USSF classes. There is an annual fee to join COSOA which is reduced for Youth officials.

Q: How do I become a referee for high school soccer?
A: If you are over 18 years of age and interested in officiating High School soccer. In Oregon the high school soccer season runs from September through November. See the COSOA web site for additional information.

Q: How do I receive assignments to officiate games?
A: In Central Oregon, there are 2 assignors, one is the Commissioner, who assigns high school games; the other is the COSOA Assignor, who assigns local youth games (i.e., OYSA and/or Kidsports). For high school, you must contact the Commissioner. For Youth, the preferred method is to send your completed availability form to OYSA. OYSA will send this form to all certified and current Oregon USSF referees on a periodic basis for each youth league and/or tournaments. On that availability form, you will also be able to provide your availability for games other than Central Oregon (which other area assignors have the option of using). The Assignors rely on this form to confirm your certification and facilitate scheduling.
In addition, you can also self-assign to games that you are qualified to officiate (as determined by OYSA). To self-assign, you must register on the Oregon Soccer Central web site.

Q: How do access or register on the web site?
A: If you are a referee or a club/organization administrator and would like to access the restricted areas of this web site, please select REGISTER listed on the left of the initial window on the web site and complete the form listed. There is no cost to register on this web site.

Q: I want to self-assign into games that have open referee positions. How do I do that?
A: When you go to the Game Search page, click on the option that says Show Me: "My assignments + open". “My assignments” refers to games assigned to you within the dates you select. “Open” refers to games that are not only available but that you also qualify. If you have no assignments and there are no open games; you should receive the following dialog box: Either there are no games posted yet for this organization/event OR there are no openings available. Please check again at a later date/time. If games are available that you qualify for, a list will be displayed. When you see an icon that looks like a green plus sign it means that you MAY be able to self assign into this game. The system will go through a quick check to make sure you "qualify" for the game( See below: Misc. web site info and criteria). If you want this assignment, click on the green+ and see if you pass the test.

Q: Am I currently registered as a USSF referee?
A: Log on to the website and click ‘My Profile.’ Near the bottom of screen you’ll notice a title ‘USSF Grade’ with the appropriate grade and current year of registration.

Q: I think my USSF registration expired and I did not send in my registration papers for this year. Who do I contact to re-register as a USSF referee?
A: The United States Soccer Federation mails pre-printed forms to each Oregon referee along with instructions. Annual registration fees are $25.00 for referee grades 7 and 8. If you did NOT receive a pre-printed form, request a blank one from the Oregon Referee Committee, 10940 SW Barnes Rd #158, Portland, Oregon 97225

Q: After I accept a game, there is a green circle AND a white circle with red line next to my name. What's the white one for?
A: The white circle with red line is a TURNBACK icon. Plans change, people get injured or sick - click this symbol to turn back an accepted assignment.
